A story of Becoming

Byte Recycling was born from a simple but powerful question: What truly happens to our old electronics once we no longer need them? Their team - being passionate about technology and environmental sustainability led them to discover a crucial but overlooked problem. Devices were gathering dust in drawers, dumped in landfills, or exported as e-waste to countries ill-equipped to handle them safely. They burdened themselves with the question "Is there a better way to do this?".

What started as a small initiative to collect unused laptops from family and friends quickly evolved into a nationwide mission. Now they are Nigeria's #1 E-Waste Recycling Company. As testament to their growth they needed a website that would firmly cement their position as industry leaders and invite clients, partners and sponsors to join their mission. I was brought in to deliver that.

Building for an industry leader

Project Discovery

I was referred by my friend Alero. The owner Uwaifo wanted a website that was simple, beautiful and had interactive elements so I suggested we build in Framer. So after a couple of calls, I received a folder with their preferred site structure, site content, brand assets, photos and blog articles. Alero is a fantastic UX writer so I didn't have any problems with copy during this project.

And it Begins..

The timeline was tight so I designed and built directly in Framer. I loved the colors and typeface in the brand guide and just spent a while playing with them while searching for inspiration. I used Pinterest and Siteinspire as my main sources. After 2 days of gathering ideas I started building the homepage. This is the first iteration of the Hero Section.

Hero Section v1

The Hero was later updated to the one below and I made this sort of imagery a recurring theme throughout the website.

Final Hero Section

As an uncommon business, emphasis was placed in explaining what they do and how it works so I made the "Get started in 3 easy steps" section attractive, easy to understand and actionable.

Cards from the Get Started section

I made custom illustrations for the tickers used in the "Why choose Byte Recycling" section and got the 3D Hover Card Component from Framer University.

A problem of population

I'll say adding a blog to the site was one of the most tedious parts of the project. Creating the CMS was pretty straightforward but uploading was a different matter. Over 30 blog articles had to be added in a day but I powered through.

Another Hurdle

So after 2 weeks of progressive iterations I completed building all the pages, and after review the designs were approved by the team. However, when it came to launching the site we couldn't pay for the Basic plan as agreed on in the beginning because at that time Framer had a CMS item limit on that plan (meaning we had to reduce the number of blogs from 30+ to like 5. They also had a 5MB limit on photos at some point, thank God for progress).

So there were a lot of meetings on the best way to proceed and after weeks of deliberation, we decided on going ahead to pay for the higher Pro plan but in an incredible turn of events, Framer revised their pricing and changed the plan features from a limit of number of CMS items to number of CMS collections (meaning we could have any number of one blog type, but we could not have 3 different blog types, which makes far more sense) so we could now pay for the Basic plan as intended from the start.

One final hurdle

The last hurdle we faced was SEO. The website was showing "Framer" in the site title name even after paying for pro and being live for weeks. I had to write an email to Google and use the Google Search Console to fix the indexing issues. I also set up canonical tags and improved the structure, and after a few weeks, the problem was fixed.

Favorite parts of the website

Here are a few of my favorite sections in the website:

Mission Grid

I used a 3x3 grid to show their mission goals while reinforcing their brand colors and providing imagery that supports these goals making it easy for the site visitors to relate to and join the mission.
